The Consortium for Gender, Sexuality, Race and Public Culture

Principal Investigator:  Karen Tongson-  Director of the Consortium for Gender, Sexuality, Race and Public Culture Professor of Gender and Sexuality Studies, English and American Studies and Ethnicity

The grant will extend across 42 months to support several initiatives to bolster intersectional work, including:

• Upscaling our multi-platform network for podcasting, public events, community engagement and alternate publication styles and formats
• Establishing graduate student assistant positions and fellowships involving collaborations with podcast networks, regional organizations, and media/publications defined by intersectional commitments
• Building a mutual aid-based mentorship model across faculty ranks, roles, and organization.

Intersectional Feminist/Queer Studies Collective:  Beyond a Boundary

Principal Investigator:    Gayatri Gopinath (Professor, Dept of Social and Cultural Analysis, NYU)

Collective Core Team:

• Jacqueline Nassy Brown (Associate Professor, Dept of Anthropology, CUNY)
• Joan Morgan (Program Director, Center for Black Visual Culture, NYU)
• Tamar Ghabin (Ph.D. Candidate, American Studies Program, NYU)

This collective will explore the inclusion and use of intersectionality by scholars, activists and artists in New York City and within the Tri-State area through:

• Public-facing events
• Collaborations with area organizations through conversations, student interns and artistic/activist exchanges
• Courses and training for students, both graduate and undergraduate

Their first event was the 8 Lives Vigil, with the community group Red Canary Song, to commemorate the lives lost in the Atlanta Spa Shootings.

School for Social and Cultural Transformations

The new Transformative Intersectional Collective (TRIC) will include three years of focus with University of Utah, regional and national partners in the following areas:

• Year 1: Intersectional curricular and pedagogical development (in specific partnership with Utah State University) featuring workshops to strengthen integration of intersectional materials surrounding disability, transgender and queer of color critique, environmental anti-racism, Indigeneity and decolonial justice, and carceral studies.
• Year 2: Financial support for intersectional research for faculty and students
• Year 3: Intersectional praxis and community engagement to fund student internships, community-engaged research and institutional change. The final year will also include the creation of a collaborative publication reflecting on all that is learned throughout the collective.

Black and Indigenous Feminist Futures Institute (BIFFI)

Mission:

The Black & Indigenous Feminist Futures Institute (BIFFI) strives to promote interdisciplinary research, scholarship, and cultural production that elevates intersectional feminist Black and Indigenous Studies. BIFFI achieves these aims through a “Fellows-in-Residence” program that hosts elders, artists, scholars, organizers, and practitioners at UVA; Summer Institutes that offer intensive instruction in intersectional feminist Black and Indigenous theories, methods, curricular design, pedagogies, and community building work; and by establishing the first “Black and Indigenous Studies Certificate Program” in the US South.
